Italian blind pilot Sabrina Papa stars in a movie about aviation

Milan, Italy – February 27 (askanews) – Sabrina Papa, 48 years old, is the first and for now the only blind Italian pilot student. Sabrina is almost completely blind from birth because of retinal dystrophy but she has always had a passion for flying.
As soon as it was possible he got on a plane d. began to pilot it. Not alone, of course. First with the help of his flight instructor, Sergio Pizzichini on a SkyArrow aircraft, then in France, where for years there is an association of blind pilots called “Les Mirauds Volants”. Today Sabrina has almost 40 hours of flight as a student pilot and is the protagonist of the docufilm “Close your eyes and fly”. “Making this documentary was very funny – Sabrina explained to askanews – then during the making of the film we realized that a very important message, fundamental, is that even impossible dreams can be realized and ‘you can’t do this’, that not only to us disabled but to anyone who is always repeated, is a stratospheric lie”. “After 3 years of experience and more than 40 hours I’m quite well from the point of view of practice. With the plane I fly in most often now I am so familiar with that now it is as if it were an extension of myself. I feel it as part of me, I feel at one with the plane. With the theory I’m a bit further back because I have to manage on my own, since there are no accessible digitized manuals I have to scan them and, in short, it’s a bit arranged while it’s something I’d like to do in a morestructured and in-depth way”. Behind the camera is the sensitive eye of Italian director Julia Pietrangeli who, in the 40-minute film produced by Human Installations and already selected by various international festivals, tells the story of Sabrina and the “Mirauds volants”. “At first you think of flight as a poetic metaphor – he said – the blind person who flies is a very powerful metaphor if you like but there was something even stronger, in my opinion, that I learned from being with Sabrina and all the others: freedom is responsibility”. Like the metaphor of the hornet that doesn’t know it’s too heavy to fly and still flies, this is the phrase that sums up the meaning of the whole film and the extraordinary adventure of Sabrina and the blind pilots. It shows that, on earth as in the clouds, there are no limits for those who know how to live up to their dreablind pilotblind pilotblind pilot
